The 2026 calendar has Halloween events on three Saturdays in a row: Oct. 17, Oct. 24 and Oct. 31, which this year falls on a Saturday. A Thursday horror series at the Crystal Theatre runs underneath them. The season closes on Friday, Nov. 6, when Carbondale Arts holds its First Friday Día de los Muertos on 4th Street Plaza. Most of this is free, and most of it is run by nonprofits, a volunteer dance troupe and the arts council rather than by businesses selling tickets.
Nearly every event asks you to bring something. At the pumpkin party you bring your own pumpkin. The Thriller dance needs dancers who have learned it, and it collects food-bank donations. The Día de los Muertos ofrenda takes mementos from the community.

The Thursday films hold the weeks together. The Crystal opened Spooktober with "Weapons" on Oct. 8, according to The Sopris Sun's curated calendar. The Crystal Theatre's schedule lists "The Shining" on Oct. 15 as rated R and 2 hours 23 minutes, with tickets at the door. The Overlook is a fictional Colorado hotel, which gives the film some extra pull this close to the first snow. "Rocky Horror" lands on Halloween weekend, but the theater hasn't posted showtimes yet.
Oct. 17: two fundraisers, a mile apart, on the same afternoon
The first Saturday is a fundraiser. The Carbondale Education Foundation's annual Oktoberfest is on Main Street at 579 Main St., across from Peppino's Pizza. Admission is free, and there's a beer garden, children's activities and a cornhole tournament that starts at noon. Music runs all day, according to the foundation's event page and The Sopris Sun:
- Hazel Kuhn, noon to 1 p.m.
- Rock & Roll Academy, 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.
- Anthony Peebles, 3 to 5 p.m.
- Sweet Jessup & The Dirty Buckets, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
- Typical Ghost, 8 to 10 p.m.
Slow Groovin' BBQ and Windy City Eats are handling food, with grilled meat and schnitzel.
One listing conflict is worth checking before you go. The Carbondale Recreation special events page lists an Oktoberfest in Chacos Park from 4 to 10 p.m. and doesn't name an organizer. The foundation's own page and The Sopris Sun both give 579 Main St. starting at noon. The organizer's listing is the safer bet, but nothing published so far explains whether the Town's entry describes the same event or a separate one.
That same afternoon, A Way Out and The Meeting Place hold their annual pumpkin carving party at The Meeting Place's headquarters, 981 Cowen Dr., from 4 to 6 p.m. Costumes, pizza and candy are on hand, and guests bring their own pumpkins. Later, Kohanna McCrary and her band play Steve's Guitars at 7:30 p.m. on her "Where We Going Tour," built around "The Colorado Project," a 17-song double album. If you're coming from Glenwood, its Oktoberfest runs on 7th Street from 3 to 8 p.m. the same day, so the two towns overlap rather than take turns.
Oct. 24: the Saturday that needs participants
The second Saturday asks more of you, and it's set by a group that has been rehearsing for weeks. Bonedale Flashmob is the year-round community dance troupe run through Coredination's Bonedale Ballet. It performs the "Thriller" routine at 4 p.m. as part of Thrill the World, a synchronized dance event held worldwide. The Town lists the location as 4th Street Plaza. The troupe's own page tells people to meet at Main and 4th and underlines "4 pm sharp," which is worth taking literally. A flash mob that starts on time is over before late arrivals have parked.
The local tradition goes back at least a decade. Aspen Public Radio covered valley dancers joining the international Thriller event in September 2015, and KDNK reported its return to Carbondale in October 2016, naming Alexandra and Anthony Jerkunica as organizers. Neither source gives an exact founding year.
This year's version has a food-bank tie-in. The troupe's page collects donations for SANA Food For All from Monday, Oct. 12, through Saturday, Oct. 24, through a QR code. That window opens tomorrow. The page also explains how the troupe works. Dancers age 8 to adult get 8 to 12 weeks to learn a piece of choreography, then perform it at Mountain Fair, First Fridays, Dandelion Days and similar events. Rehearsals are Tuesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Carbondale Branch Library, at $15 per rehearsal, with family discounts. It's too late to learn "Thriller" this season. The troupe's next listed performance is the December First Friday on Dec. 4, 2026, and the page asks prospective dancers to call Alexandra about November rehearsals.
Three hours later, the Zombie Pub Crawl takes over downtown from 7 to 10 p.m., with themed stops and entertainment at participating locations. The Town's listing doesn't name the organizer or the stops, and we found no current list. Any roster of bars you find online from past years shouldn't be treated as this year's route. Train to Busan screens at the Crystal on Thursday, Oct. 22, so zombie week has a film to start it off.
Oct. 31: the Saturday with the most blanks
Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, but it's the least defined date on the calendar. The Carbondale Historical Society has a Halloween membership event on Oct. 31, and the Town's listing gives no time or venue yet. We found no published 2026 schedule for downtown trick-or-treating. "Rocky Horror" runs Oct. 30 and 31 at the Crystal, with times still listed as coming soon.
Here's what was still unannounced as of Oct. 11:
- Showtimes for "Rocky Horror Picture Show" at the Crystal
- Time and venue for the Carbondale Historical Society event
- Any downtown trick-or-treat hours
- The Zombie Pub Crawl's organizer and stops
- The full 2026 program for Día de los Muertos
Nov. 6: the event that asks you to bring something personal
The season ends a week after Halloween, and the last event asks the most personal contribution of all. Carbondale Arts lists First Friday Día de los Muertos for Friday, Nov. 6, from 5 to 8 p.m. at 4th Street Plaza, 76 S. 4th St. It invites the community to add mementos to a shared ofrenda and says more details are coming. The Carbondale Recreation special events page lists the same First Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. on Main Street and in Chacos Park, so this is the second event this season where the Town's listing and the organizer's don't match.
Carbondale Arts' general page on the celebration describes how it has typically run. There are community and Main Street ofrendas. A procession leaves the Third Street Center at 6 p.m. and follows 3rd Street and Main Street to 4th Street Plaza. Aspen Santa-Fe Ballet Folklórico dances, and the evening includes live performances, face painting, Lotería, pan de muerto, Mexican hot chocolate, food trucks and downtown restaurants staying open. None of that has been confirmed on the 2026 event post yet, so the route and lineup could change.
The night doesn't end at 8. Thunder River Theatre Company has Consensual Improv at 67 Promenade from 8 to 9:30 p.m. the same evening. The Launchpad's current exhibitions, "The Beauty of Beasts" and "Everlasting Floral Design," close Oct. 29, before the plaza fills up. A week later, the space turns over to the Deck the Walls Holiday Market, which runs Nov. 13 through Dec. 24 at the Carbondale Arts Gallery at The Launchpad.
Put together, the three weeks follow a steady pattern. Most of these events land on Main Street, 4th Street or a block from them, and the plaza at 76 S. 4th St. hosts the flash mob, the Día procession's finish and the holiday market that follows. If you own a storefront or are weighing space along Main and 4th, the event calendar is part of how that block earns its foot traffic. Gabe Molnar advises owners and tenants on Carbondale commercial property and can walk you through how that corridor is valued. Let's Connect.
